On saturday 17 May, 2025 at 06:45 AM WIT(Eastern Indonesian Times), Theo Hesegem, the director of YKKMP received information about gunfight between the TPNPB OPM under the command of Brigadier General Egianus Kogeya against Military District Command 1715-03 Kurima, 641 task force post and Kurima sector police.

After receiving the information, Theo Hesegem along with his team travelled to Kurima using Strada car on 07:12 AM. by 08:04AM, they arrived at Yetni River, seeing that Yetni river condition cannot be crossed using any vehicle, the team left their vehicles by the river and continued going to Kurima on foot.

At 09:45 AM, Theo Hesegem along with other team members arrived at 641/BRU Kurima Task Force Post. After arriving there, Theo and us were welcomed by members of TNI BRU that were on guard. Some of the military members let us in their place and we sat together with them. Theo asked several questions to the military members there to confirm about the people and material casualties from the gunfight.

Through explanation of some TNI members at 641/BRU post, we have the following information:

“ sir, there was no victim here, only the parabola (parabolic antenna disk) that they shot. They did their offense continuously from the left side since 05:00AM until 07:00AM. When the offense happened, we held our ground inside the post and retaliated whilst taking cover inside the post.”

After about 30 minutes staying in there, Theo and the team continued the travel to Kurima regional police office. In there, they met with the head of Kurima Police and his officers, there were some mobile brigade members from Wamena there too. The mobile brigades arrived at the station ahead of team, around 10:32AM.

When the team arrived in Kurima, they asked the same questions to the Kurima Police to check on the people and material casualties.

According to the explanation given by Kurima’s head of police:

“We have no human dan material casualties. We know that they(TPNPB OPM) have entered the vicinity of the police office, but we defended our position from inside and did not come out. After they did their first shot, we retaliated and pursued them.”

After around 11:58 AM, the team left Kurima police office and went to the Yetni river through Wutalok (Airstrip) kurima while checking the whereabouts of the TPNPB-OPM, but we did not found them in our journey along Yetni River.

At 12:47 PM, we used car toward wamena city and arrived there at 13:35 PM WIT (Eastern Indonesian Times).

SUNDAY, 18 MAY 2025

18 May 2025, around 15:40 PM WIT, personnel of 641/BRU task force, Dpp. Lieutenant Colonel of Aprianda Infantry, SH., M.Sc. (commander of task force) from the direction of wamena city heading to Kurima and was stopped by the TPNPB OPM.  During the gunfight, 641/BRU task force received support Rajawali task force special team personnels from Wamena. When the gunfight happened,one of the TPNPB OPM member, Esa Giban became a victim.

The following is the TNI version of Information that we received:

1. Facts

1. On sunday, 18 May 2025, at 17:00PM WIT in Dekai District, information about gunfire exchange was acquired between task force 641/BRU with OPM around Yetni river CO. 54M 280373 9534944 that caused 1 victim MD and Pok OPM (Identity Lid).

2. There is also the event chronology as follows:

   1. At around 15:40 WIT, 641/BRU Task force Dpp. Lieutenant Colonel of Aprinda, SH.,M Sc. (chief of Task Force) from the direction of Wamena city was heading to Kurima District received blockade from Pok OPM around Yetni River CO. 54M 280373 9534944.

   2. Gunfight occurred between 641/BRU batalyon infantry task force with Pok OPM.

   3. 641/BRU Batalyon Infantry task force acquired support from the special force of 641/BRU Batalyon Infantry Task Force from Wamena.

   4. From information provided, 1 Pok OPM had died (MD), identity is still in the lid.

   5. Around 17:45 WIT the gunfight had finished, 1 victim MD from Pok OPM was evacuated to Wamena city general hospital.

3. Loss and Advantage:

1. Advantage.

   Personel. 1 person of Pok OPM died (MD).

   Material. Still in the lid.

2. Losses.

   Personel. Null

   Material. Amount of ammunition used to retaliate is still being checked.

2. Reporter’s Opinion.

1. That Pok OPM Kodap III (Regional War Commando III) did the blockade against 641/BRU task force because the location of the incident was the crossing route of the Pok OPM.

2.  The location of the incident was a critical field because Yetni River was rocky and has a strong current, and slowed down the travel and need high concentration when crossing it, this became an advantage for the Pok OPM to carry out distraction against 641/BRU Batalyon Infantry Task Force.

3. That 1 victim who died from Pok OPM has been evacuated to Wamena city general hospital for further checking and identification by medical workers.

3. NOTES.

1.  The distance from the location of incident to 641/Bru task force post and Koramil (Miitary District Command) 1715-03/Kurima is around +/- 3 km.

2. 641/Bru task force Personnel and Koramil 1715-03/Kurima carried out combat readiness in Kurima Post.

3. Support soldiers came from 641/BRU batalyon infantry task force and Rajawali Taskforce that came from Wamena.

4. The situation in Kurima District post-gunfight is vulnerable but in control. Thus our report.

Before that, Theo Hesegem received information about the event through Jayawijaya region police intelligence around 10:47 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Times) that one of the TPNPB OPM members had been shot by the TNI and was delivered to Wamena city general hospital around 10:13 WIT. After receiving the information, around 11:00 PM, Theo Hesegem went to RSUD Wamena (Wamena General Hospital) to verify the information. After verifying the information, Theo went back home.

Monday 19 May 2025

At 07:00 AM WIT, Theo and his team went back to the hospital to make a funeral. On our way to the hospital, we called the coffin woodworker to prepare the coffin. At around  07:30AM we arrived at the hospital to see the deceased body.

At around 10:00AM WIT we went and met with the family of the deceased in ilekma to request their permission so that the funeral will be carried out by YKKMP led by Theo Hesegem as the executive director of YKKMP. After requesting the family’s permission, we went back to the hospital to prepare the deceased body for funeral.

Sometime around 11:00AM, we put on proper clothing and placed the deceased body into the coffin and secured it in Wamena city general hospital. After that, we worked the cemetery and took care of all the administerial costs.

At 14:43 WIT, we brought the deceased body from Wamena city general  hospital to Sinakma burial ground. Around 15:16 WIT, a funeral ceremony was  held and was led by a God servant (Reverend Kones Kogoya) before the deceased body was buried. At 16:00 WIT, the funeral had finished and everyone went back to their own houses.
